In Panama, Offshore Energy reports the Panama Canal Authority known as ACP, announced a new weekly “NetZero Slot” starting October 5 that will offer one expedited Neopanamax transit to ships using fuels under 75 gCO₂(e)/MJ, aiming to support global decarbonization and bolster canal throughput amid operational shifts.
The program will initially prioritize dual-fuel-ready ships operating on certified low-carbon options such as LNG, ammonia, or hydrogen-based fuels. ACP confirmed the new slot guarantees 24-hour passage with just-in-time scheduling “from Period 1A,” and noted that “laden vessels and those with higher PCUMS capacities” will receive added consideration.
Phase 2, expected in 2026, will expand eligibility to ships employing “energy efficiency-oriented technologies.” Operators will need to submit technology screening reports for ACP review.
Speaking in Houston in late 2024, canal administrator Ricaurte Vásquez said Panama seeks to become an “integral shipping hub.” Earlier in March, during a conference in Tokyo, he reaffirmed Panama’s ties with Japan, its third-largest canal user.
While the canal faced reduced deep-draft transits in 2023, ACP reported a “very stable” fiscal year in 2024 and is using the NetZero Slot to anchor its 2050 climate neutrality goals.
