In Panama, on September 12, the Panama Canal Authority announced the launch of a weekly NetZero Slot starting November 2, reserved for dual-fuel vessels capable of operating on low-emission fuels, offering guaranteed 24-hour transit and flexible scheduling as part of its net-zero strategy.
To qualify, vessels must be able to run on fuels with a carbon intensity of 75 grams of CO₂ equivalent per megajoule or lower, such as green methanol, green ammonia, bio-LNG, or bio-LPG. Actual fuel use is not yet required, but ships must be built to handle eligible fuels when available.
The first competition for the slot will be held on October 3. Preference will go to loaded ships, higher tonnage, and operators with a stronger record of canal usage. The NetZero Slot will not be auctioned, setting it apart from other reserved transits.
The program offers additional incentives, including preferred scheduling, Just-in-Time arrival service, and the ability to substitute vessels of equal specs. Canal officials say the initiative supports decarbonization by rewarding early investment in alternative fuel capability and enhancing the competitiveness of low-emission shipping through operational benefits.
