In Belgium, JERA Nex bp announced that its hydrogen refueling station at the Port of Ostend is now fully commissioned and supplying fuel to the Hydrocat 48, a hydrogen-powered crew transfer vessel operated by Windcat. Developed under the EU-funded Implementation of Ship Hybridisation program, the station is among the first in Europe to trial green hydrogen bunkering for offshore service vessels.
JERA Nex bp, a joint venture between JERA Co. and bp that develops and operates offshore wind projects, led the initiative as part of ongoing efforts to decarbonize maritime operations. The Hydrocat 48, which ferries crew to offshore wind farms, will be refueled on-site with compressed hydrogen stored at the port. The station is designed to handle multiple vessels per day during its demonstration phase.
Partners include hydrogen supplier Lhyfe, compression specialist Haskel, the Port of Ostend, and several academic and industry collaborators. The trial links hydrogen use directly to offshore wind operations, testing how zero-emission fuels can be integrated into routine port and support vessel activities.
