In Singapore, NYK and its partners secured Approval-in-Principle on February 25 from ClassNK for an ammonia-fueled bunkering vessel design, developed by LMG Marin, a Seatrium subsidiary. The design will next be submitted to Singapore’s Maritime and Port Authority for evaluation. “This Approval-in-Principle represents a critical milestone in our efforts to accelerate the adoption of clean ammonia as a sustainable marine fuel,” said NYK Executive Officer Tsutomu Yokoyama.
LMG Marin conducted a Hazard Identification Study to meet International Maritime Organization safety guidelines, approved in December 2024. The vessel features ammonia dual-fuel engines from IHI Power Systems, the same type installed on the Sakigake, the world’s first commercial-use ammonia-fueled tugboat, delivered in August 2024. It will also include a bunkering boom with High-Speed Ammonia Purging Emergency Release System from TB Global Technologies.
“We are honoured to contribute to this industry-leading initiative led by NYK and its partners,” said Seatrium’s Aziz Merchant. If built, the vessel would be the first of its kind, strengthening Singapore’s position as a hub for ammonia bunkering.
