In Japan, on May 9, NYK Group subsidiary Northern Offshore Services completed construction of the Transporter, a 25.35-meter crew transfer vessel that will operate exclusively on bio-methanol fuel in European offshore wind farms, marking the first such deployment worldwide; financial details were not disclosed.
The Transporter was converted from an A-Class CTV and features 24 passenger seats, a 70 m² forward work deck, and a 30 m² aft work deck. It was designed in-house by NOS and will support personnel transport at offshore wind installations across Europe.
“This vessel is the first CTV in the world to operate solely on bio-methanol fuel,” said David Kristensson, CEO of Northern Offshore Group. “We are proud to be the first in this field and lead the industry with this world-first initiative.”
Bio-methanol, derived from biomass, produces significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional marine fuels. The vessel complements NOS’s battery-hybrid fleet and advances its stated goal of decarbonizing offshore operations.
NYK, which acquired a majority stake in Sweden-based Northern Offshore Group in 2023, continues to expand its offshore wind logistics footprint in Europe as part of a broader energy transition strategy.
