NYK unit to launch Japan’s first antioxidant for marine biodiesel in August

In Japan, Nippon Yuka Kogyo, an NYK Group company, announced it will release BioxiGuard—Japan’s first antioxidant developed specifically for marine biodiesel—on August 10, aiming to reduce oxidative degradation by about 50% and support more stable vessel operations.

Biofuels used at sea, particularly those derived from waste cooking oil and other fats, contain high levels of unsaturated fatty acids, which oxidize more quickly than petroleum-based fuels. Oxidation can lower energy content and lead to corrosion, sludge buildup, and blocked strainers.

BioxiGuard was formulated based on fuel samples from NYK-operated vessels. Nippon Yuka said the product “slows the progression of oxidative degradation and helps deter issues such as metal corrosion, strainer blockage, and cleaning-system fouling.”

Lab tests found that adding BioxiGuard at a 1:500 ratio to biodiesel fuel cut degradation rates roughly in half, potentially extending onboard fuel life and improving operational efficiency. The product is designed for biodiesel fuels containing fatty acid methyl esters.

Nippon Yuka said it will continue developing new additives and chemical solutions to address wider challenges in biofuel use as maritime shipping moves toward lower-emission operations.
