In Japan, NYK announced signing a time-charter contract with Yara Clean Ammonia on February 10, for the world’s first ammonia-fueled medium gas carrier, set for delivery in November 2026, aiming to cut emissions from maritime transport and support a growing ammonia supply chain for power generation and marine fuel.
“This collaboration enables us not only to comply with future regulations related to CO₂ emissions from sea-going vessels but also to ensure that our customers receive carbon-intensity compliant clean ammonia,” said Murali Srinivasan, Senior Vice President at Yara Clean Ammonia.
The 40,000-cubic-meter vessel, developed by NYK, will use ammonia as both cargo and fuel, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The ship’s role extends beyond transport, reinforcing ammonia’s position as a key alternative fuel in the energy transition.
Hironobu Watanabe, Managing Executive Officer at NYK, noted, “We believe that using alternative fuels, especially ammonia, is essential to reaching the net-zero goal.”
By securing this charter, Yara Clean Ammonia and NYK are advancing both decarbonization and the commercial viability of ammonia-fueled shipping, with long-term implications for cleaner energy in global trade.
