In Norway, a new biogas plant at Svalbard Airport, Longyear, was brought online on January 12. With liquid biogas (LBG) as an energy carrier, the airport will have a fossil-free solution for both electricity and heat – and Avinor is taking an important step towards significantly lower emissions from its own operations.
The modular energy plant is designed to cover Svalbard Airport’s entire electricity and heat needs. The plant consists of three micro gas turbines for power production, combined with heat recovery and a biogas boiler for efficient production of thermal energy for heating.
The biogas plant is modular and can be easily moved. Avinor sees the solution as partly temporary, and at the same time wants to share experiences and knowledge from the project into the further energy transition in Longyearbyen.
