Norway backs green shipping with NOK 940m boost

In Norway Enova announced the country has allocated NOK 940 million to support 14 zero-emission vessels and a charging facility as part of its green shipping initiatives. The funding includes seven ammonia-powered ships, two hydrogen-powered vessels, and five electric ships, advancing the nation’s drive toward maritime decarbonization.

Enova, a government body promoting low-emission solutions, aims to showcase ammonia and hydrogen as viable zero-emission fuels while building the infrastructure needed for their adoption. Supported projects include supply and cargo vessels, passenger ships, and bunkering operations. Among recipients, DOF Group ASA secured NOK 298 million for two ammonia supply vessels, while Cruise Service AS received NOK 171 million for two hydrogen passenger vessels.

Enova’s initiatives extend to electrification, with NOK 281 million supporting five electric vessels and a charging facility. These projects are projected to cut over 5,000 tons of CO2 annually, bolstering battery-powered shipping. Additional funding rounds are slated for 2025, underscoring Norway’s commitment to sustainable maritime innovation.
