Ningbo-Zhoushan Port to build three green corridors with Hamburg, Wilhelmshaven, Valencia

May 29, 2025 |

In China, Xinde Marine News reports on May 27 Ningbo-Zhoushan Port signed agreements with Germany’s Hamburg and Wilhelmshaven ports and Spain’s Valencia port to build three green shipping corridors, establishing what it called “the most under-construction green corridors of any Chinese hub,” with project costs undisclosed.

The trilateral initiative was formalized during the 2025 Maritime Silk Road Port Cooperation Forum, timed with the 50th anniversary of China-EU diplomatic relations. The corridors will connect container terminals via designated liner routes, enabling joint implementation of shore power, clean fuel bunkering, cargo flow optimization, and renewable energy deployment.

According to the port, the corridors aim to create “gate-to-gate net-zero maritime transport” through cooperation with shipping companies, cargo owners, energy suppliers, and policy institutes. Actions will include shared infrastructure for cold ironing, clean bunkering of fuels such as ammonia and methanol, and smart management tools.

The three European ports bring distinct decarbonization strategies: Hamburg operates a certified carbon-neutral terminal; Wilhelmshaven focuses on hydrogen-driven logistics; and Valencia targets full renewable energy integration by 2030. Ningbo-Zhoushan has already deployed LNG-diesel hybrid tugboats and achieved full shore power coverage at all non-chemical berths, with over 20 million kWh of shore power used annually.
