Netherlands awards $822M in subsidies for 602MW of sustainable hydrogen
In the Netherlands, there will be 11 new projects with large electrolysers from companies in the Netherlands, which will make sustainable hydrogen with the help of subsidy. The electrolysers together have a capacity of approximately 602 megawatts (MW). Refineries, the chemical industry or filling stations can use the hydrogen to make it more sustainable and reduce CO2 emissions.
The electrolysis capacity of 602 MW is 3 times more than the largest hydrogen plant currently under construction in the Netherlands. It is also enough to let 5,000 trucks drive on hydrogen for a year. The companies that receive subsidy gain experience with the technology, permit procedures and the regulation of certificates for their sustainable hydrogen. In this way, we try to accelerate the development of sustainable hydrogen with subsidies.
For their projects, the companies receive more than € 700 million in a subsidy from the 2nd round of the Subsidy scheme large-scale production fully renewable hydrogen via electrolysis (OWE). This subsidy is for companies that build an electrolyser of 0.5 MW or more to make sustainable hydrogen. These electrolysers produce the hydrogen with renewable electricity.
In total, almost €1 billion in subsidy was available. Companies applied for a subsidy for more than € 3.2 billion in the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO). Applicants who do not receive a subsidy could not make it clear enough that the hydrogen they produce is actually used. Projects that are not economically feasible and projects that cannot be ready on time will not receive a subsidy.
