In Maryland, Freightwaves reports the Neoliner Origin arrived this week on its first U.S. port of call, marking the American debut of the world’s first commercial sail-powered container-roll on/roll off vessel. Operated by Neoline, the ship sails a monthly route from Saint-Nazaire, France, with stops in Saint-Pierre et Miquelon and Halifax before reaching the Port of Baltimore.
Built by RMK Marine in Turkey, the 446-foot vessel carries up to 5,300 tons of cargo or 265 TEUs across three decks. Propelled primarily by wind using two 295-foot masts and 32,000 square feet of sails, it is supported by hybrid diesel-electric engines. Neoline estimates that sails will supply 60 to 70 percent of the ship’s propulsion. Cruising speed is limited to 11 knots to conserve fuel.
The ship sustained sail damage in rough weather two days out from France. Technicians were flown in to assist, and the ship completed its voyage with a delayed arrival in Maryland roughly two weeks after departure.
