In Brazil, Spanish news agency EFE reports that about twenty countries, including Chile, Mexico, Panama and Guatemala, joined the initiative to quadruple the use of biofuels until 2035, in the framework of the summit of leaders of COP30 in Belém. The initiative, co-sponsored by Brazil, Japan and Italy, aims to foster international cooperation to extend sustainable fuels, such as green hydrogen, biogas or ethanol, currently with a residual share in energy markets.
The commitment, assumed in a statement released Friday, is, “at the very least,” to quadruple the use of these products until 2035 by means of “the implementation of existing or new policies.”
Named “Belém 4X”, the statement explains that these energy sources “need to be produced in scale and at competitive prices” so that they complement electricity and can help “replace fossil fuels in transport and industry”. At the moment, ‘Belém 4X’ received the support of 19 countries: Armenia, Belarus, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Guatemala, Guinea, India, Italy, Japan, Maldives, Mexico, Mozambique, Myanmar, the Netherlands, Panama, North Korea, Sudan and Zambia.
