In Switzerland, Offshore Energy reports Swiss shipping company MSC placed a $1.2 billion order for up to six 22,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel containerships at China Merchants Heavy Industry Haimen, with three firm orders and three optional units to be delivered starting in 2027, according to shipbroker Intermodal.
The vessels, priced between $206 million and $210 million each, are part of MSC’s ongoing fleet expansion strategy focused on alternative-fueled tonnage. The company has repeatedly turned to Chinese shipyards in recent months, including Zhoushan Changhong and Hengli Heavy Industries, with additional LNG-powered orders placed in late 2024.
LNG dual-fuel propulsion remains a leading choice among global carriers as they respond to emissions regulations and future fuel supply constraints. Based on data from DNV’s Alternative Fuels Insight platform, 87 LNG-powered ships have been added to the global orderbook so far, with container vessels making up the vast majority.
MSC’s latest order continues a trend that includes the recent delivery of the MSC Germany, a 16,000 TEU LNG-powered ship. These newbuilds are expected to enter service gradually over the next five years, expanding the carrier’s low-emission fleet capacity on high-volume trade routes.
