In Japan, Tokyo-based Mitsui O.S.K. Lines announced that it has obtained third-party certification from ClassNK for its book and claim service for pure car carriers, marking the first certification of its kind in Japan’s maritime shipping industry. The service, designed to allocate greenhouse gas reduction credits to customers, will commence in January 2025.
The book and claim method allows MOL to record GHG reductions achieved by using low-carbon fuels, such as LNG and biofuels, on its fleet of car carriers. These reductions are then issued as certificates that customers can use to offset their own emissions. ClassNK validated the methodology, ensuring transparency and accuracy in calculating and allocating these credits.
MOL, which plans to deploy 14 new LNG-fueled car carriers, aims to reduce its operational GHG emissions while enabling societal decarbonization through innovative initiatives like this. The program aligns with MOL’s broader commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
As a board member of the Book and Claim Community, MOL is advancing environmental initiatives in logistics, demonstrating leadership in integrating sustainability into maritime operations. This certification represents a key milestone in fostering low-carbon shipping practices.
