MOL makes waves with ammonia-fueled fleet

March 27, 2025 |

In Japan, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, its Singapore-based subsidiary MOL Chemical Tankers, and Belgium’s CMB.TECH announced they will jointly own and charter nine ammonia-fueled Capesize bulkers and chemical tankers—the first vessels of their kind worldwide—“amid the trend toward decarbonization.”

“These will be the world’s first ammonia dual-fuel Capesize bulkers and chemical tankers,” MOL said. The vessels are part of the group’s “MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.2,” a strategy to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

“Ammonia is drawing worldwide attention as a next-generation clean energy source,” the company stated in its release, citing the maritime sector’s search for alternatives to fossil-based marine fuels.

The collaboration with CMB.TECH, which supplies hydrogen and ammonia fuel through its own production or third-party partners, aligns with both companies’ decarbonization objectives and expands their operational footprint. MOL Chemical Tankers, based in Singapore, operates the industry’s largest stainless steel chemical fleet with more than 110 vessels worldwide.
