MOL launches B30 biofuel trial on coal carrier

July 2, 2025 |

In Japan, on June 27, Japan’s Mitsui O.S.K. Lines launched a trial voyage using B30 biofuel aboard the HOKULINK, a next-generation coal carrier operated for Hokuriku Electric Power Company, following refueling at Yeosu Port in South Korea.

The fuel is a 30 percent blend of waste-based biomass with conventional marine oil and is certified under the ISCC-EU standard. It can be used in existing diesel engines without modification. This marks the first trial voyage using B30 by a Japanese power utility.

The HOKULINK was developed under MOL’s “EeneX” program to improve the environmental performance of coal transport. The voyage qualifies for carbon inset certification through MOL’s “BLUE ACTION NET-ZERO ALLIANCE” scheme, which enables verified low-carbon shipping activity to be counted toward emissions reduction efforts.

MOL said the test aligns with its “BLUE ACTION 2035” strategy and its broader effort to introduce clean fuels across its dry bulk fleet.
