MOL joins Pilbara ammonia bunkering project

October 9, 2025 |

In Australia, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines signed a memorandum of understanding on October 7 with NH3 Clean Energy and Oceania Marine Energy to participate in the development of an ammonia bunkering hub in the Pilbara region, marking the first time a foreign shipping company has joined the effort.

Pilbara Ports Authority announced the hub concept in June as part of its clean fuel strategy, with plans to begin ammonia bunkering for capesize bulk carriers at Dampier and Port Hedland by 2030. NH3 will supply low-carbon ammonia and Oceania will operate the bunkering services.

“The Pilbara region will be an important base for our ammonia dual-fuel capesize bulk carriers scheduled to begin commercial operations in 2026,” said MOL’s Executive Officer Kazuhiro Takahashi, “This collaboration is an important step toward establishing a safe and reliable ammonia bunkering business in the Pilbara region.”
