MOL and MGC extend methanol shipping legacy with new dual-fuel tanker

June 4, 2025 |

In Japan, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines delivered the KOHZAN MARU VII, a methanol-fueled chemical tanker, to Mitsubishi Gas Chemical under a long-term charter agreement. Built by Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in Ulsan, South Korea, the vessel is designed to carry renewable methanol and operate on the same fuel.

The new ship builds on a partnership that began in 1983, when MOL and MGC launched Japan’s first methanol-dedicated tanker, the original KOHZAN MARU. That vessel marked the start of Japan’s commercial methanol shipping operations and laid the foundation for handling the fuel at sea.

According to MOL, the new vessel draws on decades of operational experience to ensure safe, efficient methanol transport and use. The ship is equipped with a dual-fuel engine that can run on methanol or conventional marine fuel.

A naming ceremony was held on May 23 at the shipyard, attended by MGC Chairman Takashi Fujii. The ship is part of MOL’s plan to operate 90 methanol- or LNG-fueled vessels by 2030.
