MI LNG charts new course as MILES

January 1, 2025 |

In Japan, the nameplate on MI LNG Company’s headquarters will soon read MILES Co., Ltd., signaling a shift in focus for the joint venture between Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Imabari Shipbuilding. Starting January 1, 2025, the rebranded firm will dive deeper into designing ships powered by alternative fuels like ammonia and methanol while taking on the challenge of liquefied CO₂ carriers for carbon capture and storage.

Once solely focused on LNG carriers, the company has broadened its horizons. A 2023 agreement with Nihon Shipyard brought non-LNG commercial vessels into its portfolio, and now the new MILES identity underscores its push into the heart of the maritime energy transition. Engineers are already sketching out designs for liquefied CO₂ carriers, collaborating with Japan’s leading shipbuilders and shipping companies to establish industry-wide standards for these vessels.
