Mexico repeals regulation that prevented the import of genetically modified corn

February 8, 2025 |

In Argentina, La Voz del Interior reported that Mexico’s government lifted restrictions on imports of genetically modified corn for human consumption.

The Ministry of Economy published in the Official Gazette of the Federation the agreement that nullified the application of various restrictions on glyphosate and transgenic corn agreed by the previous government in 2023.

For years, former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador defended the restriction on the import of genetically modified corn, arguing that it could affect people’s health, and denied that the measure undermined the trade agreement between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC).

Following the ruling, the Mexican government announced that it would promote legislation to prevent the planting and cultivation of genetically modified corn in Mexico.
