In Spain, ferry operator Baleària will trial Methanol Reformer’s modular e-Nomad power unit, the first containerized system in Europe to generate electricity from e-methanol onboard a vessel. Announced November 25, the unit will be installed on the Cap de Barbaria, an electric ferry serving the route between Eivissa and Formentera.
The e-Nomad reforms e-methanol into hydrogen, which feeds a fuel cell to produce auxiliary electricity. This power will support battery charging during operations and reduce the vessel’s reliance on shore connections or diesel backup. The unit has passed factory acceptance testing and is scheduled for commissioning in the coming weeks.
At the core of the e-Nomad is Methanol Reformer’s L18 hydrogen generator, developed under license from Element1 and adapted for maritime use with E1 Marine. Its compact, self-contained design allows for flexible deployment in vessels and port settings.
