Methanol first as PTP fuels Maersk ship

November 27, 2024 |

In Malaysia, The Malaysian Reserve reports the Port of Tanjung Pelepas in Malaysia, a joint venture between MMC Group and APM Terminals, completed its inaugural methanol bunkering operation for Maersk’s Antonia Maersk, a dual-fuel container vessel, on an unspecified recent date, showcasing its capacity for alternative marine fuels and sustainable shipping.

The Antonia Maersk, the third in a series of 18 low-emission vessels, underscores Maersk’s commitment to green shipping. PTP Chairman Tan Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh hailed the event as a “pivotal step” toward enhancing PTP’s reputation as a premier logistics hub. CEO Mark Hardiman praised the collaboration with Maersk, Johor Port Authority, and Malaysian government agencies, calling it a model for future partnerships.

Preparation included tabletop safety exercises, rigorous operational assessments, and risk modeling. The successful bunkering reflects PTP’s ability to handle emerging fuel technologies and its readiness for more trials.

In 2024, PTP has consistently processed over one million TEUs monthly and ranked fifth in the World Bank’s Container Port Performance Index. With an annual capacity of 13 million TEUs, PTP is Malaysia’s busiest transshipment hub, now leading in green maritime initiatives while bolstering global trade connectivity.
