In Texas, Clean Hydrogen Works awarded McDermott the front-end engineering and design contract on for its Ascension Clean Energy project in Ascension Parish, Louisiana, a facility set to produce 2.4 million metric tons of clean ammonia annually starting in 2029, with a planned expansion to 7.2 million metric tons.
The ACE project is a joint effort between CHW, ExxonMobil, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, and Hafnia. With ExxonMobil providing carbon capture and storage services, the project aims to sequester emissions while producing low-carbon ammonia for use in industrial and shipping sectors. Regulatory approvals are expected in early 2025, with a final investment decision anticipated by late 2025.
The project will bring an estimated 350 permanent jobs, 1,500 peak construction jobs, and 1,200 indirect jobs to the area. CHW Senior Vice President Johnny Cook called McDermott’s involvement “a key competitive advantage,” citing its expertise in mega module construction. Rob Shaul, McDermott’s Senior Vice President of Low Carbon Solutions, highlighted the company’s ability to deliver modular implementation solutions with reduced risk and cost.
