MAN 2 mod 10 more Maersk ships 4 methanol

December 12, 2024 |

In Singapore, Manifold Times reports MAN Energy Solutions will retrofit 10 additional Maersk vessels to run on methanol fuel, following the successful conversion of the Maersk Halifax earlier this year. The retrofit allows ships to operate on green methanol, reducing carbon emissions by up to 90%.

The project supports Maersk’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2040. Leonardo Sonzio, Maersk’s Head of Fleet Management, said retrofitting existing vessels offers a faster, more sustainable path to low-emission shipping compared to building new ones.

Michael Petersen, Senior Vice President at MAN, highlighted the importance of retrofits in reducing emissions industry-wide. MAN estimates that over 4,000 ships globally could be adapted to operate on green fuels like methanol, providing shipowners with a practical solution to meet climate goals.

The partnership between MAN and Maersk underscores the growing shift in the maritime industry towards cleaner fuel technologies. These retrofits offer a scalable way to cut emissions while keeping ships in service, balancing environmental progress with operational needs.
