In Australia, shoe brand Make Good has created a Derby shoe style with a variety of biobased materials. Dubbed Derby V1, the shoe includes an upper made from mycelium fibers, cellulose, natural latex and organic cotton. The sole is 51% natural rubber.
According to Rag Trader, around 23 billion shoes are manufactured annually. Most end up in landfills. Around 1.4% of global emissions can be traced back to the footwear industry.
Paul Griffin, a podiatrist and footwear industry consultant who founded Make Good, added that footwear is one of the least-scrutinized corners of the fashion industry. “Footwear waste is a blind spot in fashion,” he said. “We wanted to create something designed with the end in mind, something that feels timeless but is built for a different kind of future.”
