Maersk names new dual-fuel methanol vessel after founder

December 5, 2024 |

In Singapore on November 28, Maersk held a naming ceremony for its latest dual-fuel methanol container vessel, the A.P. Møller marking the ship’s maiden voyage from Asia to Europe and reaffirming the company’s commitment to sustainable shipping. Named after Arnold Peter Møller, Maersk’s founder, the vessel is the ninth in a planned fleet of 18 methanol-powered ships set for delivery by 2025.

Built by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea, the A.P. Møller is equipped to carry 16,592 TEU and represents a significant step toward Maersk’s 2040 net-zero emissions goal. Methanol fuel can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 65% compared to traditional bunker oil, depending on the production process.

The event brought together Maersk Board Chair Robert Uggla, government officials, and industry leaders, including Ms. Chan Su-Shan, godmother of the vessel and wife of Temasek Holdings’ CEO. Singapore continues to play a key role in maritime innovation, as demonstrated by its support for methanol bunkering and alternative fuels.
