In Denmark, Maersk has completed the conversion of the Maersk Halifax into a dual-fuel methanol-powered container ship, the largest retrofit of its kind, following an 88-day operation at Zhoushan Xinya Shipyard in China, finalized in October 2024. The retrofit, led by MAN Energy Solutions, included replacing engine parts, adding new fuel tanks, a fuel preparation room, and a fuel supply system.
Leonardo Sonzio, Maersk’s head of fleet management and technology, confirmed the vessel’s return to the Transpacific trade after successful sea trials. “We are happy to announce Maersk Halifax has been retrofitted into a dual-fuel methanol vessel,” he stated.
The conversion is part of Maersk’s broader strategy to meet its net-zero emissions goal by 2040. “Retrofits of existing vessels can be an important alternative to newbuilds in our transition from fossil fuels to low-emissions fuels,” Sonzio added, highlighting plans to apply lessons from this project to future retrofits.
