Maersk deploys methanol-ready mid-size vessel Tangier Mærsk

In Denmark, Maersk has taken delivery of Tangier Mærsk, the first in a new class of six methanol-capable mid-size containerships built by Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group in China. The 9000 TEU vessel will begin service on the TP15 route connecting East Asia to the US Gulf Coast via the Panama Canal, starting with a Shanghai call on its maiden voyage.

The new series supports Maersk’s fleet renewal strategy and is part of its broader decarbonization effort. All six ships are equipped with dual-fuel engines capable of running on methanol, with deliveries scheduled through early 2027.

Tangier Mærsk was handed over three months ahead of schedule, underscoring the pace of Maersk’s alternative-fuel fleet expansion. The remaining five vessels are expected to enter service within the next year, contributing to the company’s goal of reaching net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.

Maersk Head of Chartering & Newbuilding Anda Cristescu called the vessel a step toward long-term competitiveness. With methanol-ready tonnage growing and deployment shifting toward key trade corridors, the company is positioning this class as a scalable bridge between deep-sea logistics and next-generation fuels.
