Mabanaft plans methanol storage at Hamburg Port

January 23, 2025 |

In Germany, energy company Mabanaft announced a multi-million-euro project to convert four tanks at its Blumensand terminal in the Port of Hamburg for methanol storage, aiming to support northern Germany’s transition to low-carbon fuels by 2027.

The tanks, with a combined capacity of 20,000 cubic meters, will be converted in two stages, pending approval from Hamburg’s Authority of Environment, Climate, Energy, and Agriculture. The first two tanks are set for completion by mid-2026, with the remainder ready by 2027. Mabanaft plans to import, store, and distribute methanol to customers in the shipping, transportation, and chemical industries.

“In the shipping industry, there is no single solution for sustainable fuels,” said Oleksandr Siromakha, Head of Sustainable Fuels at Mabanaft. He emphasized the importance of offering various low-carbon options, including methanol, to meet customer needs.

Methanol, which can be produced through renewable electricity and captured CO2, biomass, or natural gas with carbon capture, is gaining interest as a fuel for shipping and other sectors. Mabanaft’s plans underscore the increasing focus on infrastructure to support low-carbon fuels, with demand expected to grow as industries seek decarbonization solutions.
