LR greenlights Hyundai’s ammonia-powered mega ship

November 6, 2024 |

In the United Kingdom, Lloyd’s Register granted Approval in Principle to HD Hyundai Heavy Industries for a 15,300 TEU ammonia-powered dual-fuel container ship, serving as an early validation that confirms the feasibility and compliance of the design with safety standards. The project aims to address the shipping industry’s carbon reduction efforts through alternative fuel solutions.

The 365-meter ultra-large container ship incorporates a twin skeg design and features two market-available small bore engines, with ammonia tanks positioned forward of the engine room to enhance safety. “This project demonstrates our commitment to supporting the energy transition in the maritime industry,” stated Kim Young-Doo, GTSO Representative for Korea, Lloyd’s Register.

Ammonia’s zero-carbon combustion potential is offset by its toxicity, presenting safety challenges that the design seeks to mitigate. Lloyd’s Register’s comprehensive review included a feasibility assessment of low-temperature steel tanks, structural checks for sloshing resilience, and fuel gas supply system evaluations. Jeon Seung-ho, Head of Shipping Technology Division at HHI, noted, “This milestone advances understanding of ammonia as a marine fuel, setting the stage for future shipbuilding.”
