Louis Dreyfus Company buys grain facility in Uruguay, aims to expand camelina planting

January 19, 2025 |

In Uruguay, Infonegocios reported that Louis Dreyfus Company (LDC) announced the acquisition of a grain and oilseed storage facility in Colonia, Uruguay.

This facility, operated by the company for the past six years, is strategically located 2.5 kilometers from the port of Nueva Palmira , Uruguay’s main bulk terminal.

The report noted that crops such as soybean, wheat, rapeseed, carinata and, soon, camelina are processed there.

Mario Sampaolesi, commercial manager of LDC in Uruguay, said: “We decided to operate this plant on a rental basis to evaluate its strategic potential near the port. The results demonstrated its importance and convinced us to consolidate our presence by acquiring the asset. This step reaffirms our commitment to the country and the Uruguayan agricultural sector,” he said.

The report also stated that the firm had started trials with camelina, with an initial 5,000 hectares last year. By 2025, LDC plans to expand this area three to five times, taking advantage of its potential as a rotation alternative and its demand in international markets.

“Camelina has a cycle that complements our storage and logistics capacity during the winter. In 2025, the oil resulting from the milling will be exported, mainly to Europe, while by-products such as flour will be marketed in Uruguay,” explained Sampaolesi.
