LNG Cargo Ship Makes U.S. Debut at Port Everglades

April 24, 2025 |

In Florida, Offshore Energy reports Port Everglades received its first liquefied natural gas–powered cargo vessel, the Quetzal, a 1,400-TEU containership chartered by Crowley from Singapore-based Eastern Pacific Shipping, marking the ship’s first U.S. port call and the port’s latest move toward lower-emission maritime transport.

The Quetzal, equipped with high-pressure ME-GI engines from Germany’s MAN Energy Solutions, arrived on its maiden commercial voyage from Central America. It is the first of four Avance Class vessels Crowley will operate under long-term charter, each designed to transport refrigerated and dry cargo with 300 reefer plugs on board.

“Over the last year, our port has welcomed several cruise ships that use LNG, and we applaud Crowley’s efforts to reduce its impact when transporting perishables through Florida’s No. 1 port for perishable goods,” said Port Director Joseph Morris. “It’s clear that our maritime future relies on innovation and continuous evolution.”

Port Everglades, which moves an average of one million containers annually, is a major gateway for trade with Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe, and Asia. The Quetzal adds to the port’s growing portfolio of LNG-capable vessels.
