Lloyd’s Register launches Biofuel Advisory to support maritime fuel transition

September 17, 2025 |

In the UK, Lloyd’s Register on September 16 launched a Biofuel Advisory service at London International Shipping Week to help shipowners, fuel suppliers and producers manage the adoption of marine biofuels through support with safety, certification, compliance and onboard integration.

The service builds on two years of development and draws from Lloyd’s Register’s Fuel Oil Bunker Analysis and Advisory Service, which has over two decades of experience working with alternative fuels. It is intended to address technical uncertainty as operators respond to emerging regulations on lifecycle emissions and fuel quality.

Lloyd’s Register has worked with fuel producers to assess regulatory impacts, advised suppliers on documentation and traceability, and supported shipowners in conducting biofuel trials across vessel fleets. The advisory covers issues ranging from fuel properties to operational risk and is intended to help clients align with frameworks such as FuelEU Maritime and the EU Emissions Trading System.
