Lloyd’s Register and Deployable Energy explore shipboard micro-nuclear

October 1, 2025 |

In the UK, Lloyd’s Register and Deployable Energy, a Houston-based nuclear technology company, announced continued collaboration to develop the Unity Nuclear Battery, a modular, factory-built micro-reactor designed to power ships with zero-emission energy.

LR Advisory is guiding the system’s alignment with international maritime regulations. A recent technical workshop gathered experts from classification, safety assurance, and advisory teams to assess licensing pathways, safety case development, and integration planning for future deployment on vessels.

Mark Tipping, LR’s Global Power to X Director, said, “Deployable Energy’s technology is designed with a focus on practicality, using Low Enriched Uranium fuel, industry proven materials, and a factory-built, modular approach. These features directly address key barriers to adoption and align with the safety and reliability expectations of classification and regulatory frameworks.”

The companies will continue to refine risk assessments and qualification milestones. The Unity Nuclear Battery remains in the regulatory preparation phase, with pilot maritime deployments planned later this decade.
