Lithuanian researchers study using HVO100 in rail

August 6, 2025 |

In Lithuania, a team of researchers at Klaipėda University (KU) is conducting comprehensive studies aimed at evaluating whether HVO100 plant-based diesel fuel can be applied in Lithuanian rail transport as a more sustainable alternative to conventional fuel. One of the key advantages of this fuel in the context of decarbonization is that it can be used with the existing rolling stock without requiring significant technical modifications. The goal of KU researchers is to determine how this fuel affects the energy efficiency indicators of rolling stock engines, the emission of greenhouse gases (GHG) and harmful components, as well as the operational reliability of technical components under real operating conditions.
