Koppö Energia taps thyssenkrupp Uhde for Finnish green methanol plant

May 7, 2025 |

In Germany, thyssenkrupp Uhde announced it received a front-end engineering design contract award from Koppö Energia Oy for a green methanol plant in Kristinestad, Finland, to produce 450 metric tons per day of e-methanol from captured CO₂ and renewable hydrogen.

The e-methanol will serve maritime and e-gasoline fuel markets. CO₂ will be captured at a waste incineration facility in Vaasa and transported by truck to the site. The project forms part of a broader power-to-x initiative backed by Koppö Energia, a joint venture between CPC Finland and Germany’s Prime Capital.

thyssenkrupp Uhde’s technology was selected for its process efficiency, which the company said “enhance[s] the project revenues and its feasibility.” Nadja Håkansson, CEO of thyssenkrupp Uhde, called the agreement “an excellent proof point for cross-industrial cooperation in the establishment of green methanol as a fuel.”

Construction timelines and investment figures were not disclosed. The project highlights growing interest in carbon-to-fuel pathways at commercial scale, combining waste CO₂ capture, electrolysis, and synthetic fuel production under one integrated platform.
