Kongsberg wins contract for alcohol-ready Transpetro tankers

February 11, 2026 |

In Brazil, Kongsberg Maritime has been contracted to design and equip four handy-size product tankers for Transpetro, with construction to take place at Ecovix in Rio Grande and MacLaren in Niterói under the MareNova consortium.

The vessels are specified as methanol and ethanol ready, giving the future fleet the option to transition to alcohol-based fuels as supply and regulation evolve. The ships will be based on Kongsberg’s NVC 615 PT design platform and are intended for domestic product transport within Brazil’s coastal trade.

The agreement forms part of Transpetro’s fleet renewal program and comes amid renewed activity in Brazilian shipbuilding. By pairing local yard capacity with international ship design and systems integration, the project links Brazil’s tanker replacement cycle with growing interest in alternative liquid fuels that can be handled using modified conventional fuel systems.

For Kongsberg Maritime, which maintains operations in Niterói, the contract reinforces its role in Brazil’s tanker and offshore segments while embedding fuel flexibility into a new generation of product carriers.
