Kawasaki delivers dual-fuel LPG/ammonia carrier Lucent Pathfinder

February 4, 2026 |

In Japan, Kawasaki Heavy Industries has delivered Lucent Pathfinder, an 86,700 cubic meter LPG-fueled LPG/ammonia carrier to Tsurugi Maritima, marking the eleventh vessel of its kind and the eighteenth dual-fuel ship the yard has built using its ME-LGIP engine platform.

The vessel is designed to carry both LPG and ammonia, either separately or simultaneously, and meets Phase 3 of the IMO’s Energy Efficiency Design Index. Despite increased cargo capacity over previous 84,000 cubic meter designs, Lucent Pathfinder retains dimensions compatible with global LPG terminals. The ship is equipped with shaft generators that allow diesel generators to shut down during normal sailing, enabling nearly full-time LPG operation.

Its main engine meets global sulfur oxide and nitrogen oxide standards through a combination of exhaust gas recirculation and selective catalytic reduction systems. The design has also received Approval in Principle from ClassNK for future ammonia fuel use, making it transition-ready as demand for zero-carbon propulsion grows.

With Lucent Pathfinder, Kawasaki has now delivered 81 LPG carriers in total. The company plans to expand its offerings to include ammonia- and hydrogen-capable vessels, part of its broader push toward environmentally aligned ship designs across multiple fuel types.
