Japan’s ITOCHU and India’s L&T partner on green ammonia

August 14, 2025 |

In India, Offshore Energy reports L&T Energy GreenTech, a wholly owned subsidiary of Larsen & Toubro, has signed a joint development agreement with Japan’s ITOCHU Corporation to build a 300,000-tonne-a-year green ammonia plant at Kandla, Gujarat. ITOCHU plans to offtake the product for bunkering in Singapore.

L&T acquired land at Kandla last year for green hydrogen and ammonia projects. The deal supports L&T’s aim to build a presence across the green energy value chain and complements ITOCHU’s push to bring low-carbon ammonia to the marine fuel market.

“As the global energy landscape shifts decisively towards sustainability, L&T remains deeply committed to driving the clean energy transition through innovation, strategic partnerships, and engineering excellence,” said Subramanian Sarma, Deputy Managing Director and President, L&T. “The partnership with ITOCHU reflects L&T’s larger vision of enabling a cleaner, greener future through sustainable business focus.”

ITOCHU has already commissioned a 5,000 cubic meter ammonia bunkering vessel from Sasaki Shipbuilding and an ammonia tank plant from Izumi Steel Works. The vessel is scheduled for delivery in 2027 for a bunkering demonstration in Singapore.
