In Japan, Tsuneishi Shipbuilding launched Japan’s first hydrogen-fueled tugboat, a 38-meter vessel powered by two 4,400-horsepower hydrogen-mixed combustion engines, equipped with 250 kg of onboard hydrogen storage, and constructed entirely from low-emission “JGreeX” green steel to reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 60 percent.
The launch is part of the Nippon Foundation’s Zero Emission Ship Project, which supports hydrogen as a path to domestic maritime carbon neutrality by 2050. The vessel runs on hydrogen and A heavy oil, offering full operational performance with the ability to switch fuels for safety. Green steel from JFE Steel was used across the hull, contributing to a 100% reduction in steel-related emissions.
“This time, we were able to safely launch our first hydrogen fuel tugboat,” said Takanori Nishijima, Managing Executive Officer at Tsuneishi Shipbuilding. “We will continue to take a multi-angle approach to the development and construction of new fuel ships.”
