In Japan, six Japanese firms— IHI Corporation, Hokkaido Electric Power, Mitsubishi Gas Chemical, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Mizuho Bank, and Tokyo Century Corporation— signed a memorandum of understanding to explore investment in a green ammonia project in Odisha, India, aiming to produce 400,000 tons annually by 2030 for transport to Japan.

“IHI Corporation is dedicated to pioneering Japan’s first green ammonia value chain,” the company said, adding it aims to build and expand this value chain “both domestically and internationally.”

The project, led by India’s ACME Group, will supply green ammonia to Japanese power and chemical sectors. Mitsui O.S.K. Lines “has signed an MoU with IHI Corporation to develop a green ammonia supply chain,” including marine transport to Japan’s primary terminals.

Mizuho Bank stated it “aims to execute financing of 2 trillion yen for these sectors by 2030.” Mitsubishi Gas Chemical said it “seeks to promote the decarbonization of ammonia… and contribute to the transition to a decarbonized society.”

Hokkaido Electric is exploring ammonia use at its Tomatoh-Atsuma power station, while Tokyo Century is “considering participation in the ammonia business… to promote new renewable energy sources.”
