Italy delivers 100 percent renewable marine fuel at Genoa and Ravenna

October 30, 2025 |

In Italy, ships can now receive 100 percent hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) diesel by barge at the ports of Genoa and Ravenna. The unblended renewable fuel is supplied under new agreements with shipping operators, and deliveries began in late October. Venice is expected to follow by the end of the year.

Produced at Enilive’s biorefineries in Venice and Gela, HVO is made primarily from waste oils, animal fats, and food industry residues. The fuel is certified for use in approved marine engines and qualifies under EU Renewable Energy Directive rules. Reported lifecycle emissions reductions range from 60 to 90 percent compared to fossil marine fuels, depending on feedstock.

The bunker service supports compliance with the FuelEU Maritime regulation and may reduce exposure under the EU Emissions Trading System. Fuel is supplied directly from depot to vessel via coastal barge, avoiding terminal handling.
