Italy completes first ship-to-ship bio-LNG bunkering in Genoa

December 10, 2025 |

In Italy, LNG Industry reports Axpo and ferry operator GNV have completed the country’s first ship-to-ship bio-LNG bunkering operation at the Port of Genoa. The GNV Virgo is the first Italian long-distance ro-pax ferry powered by LNG to enter regular service. Fueled with bio-LNG derived from organic waste, the vessel will operate in line with EU decarbonization targets when green fuel is available, offering significantly lower lifecycle emissions than conventional marine fuels.

GNV CEO Matteo Catani described the event as “a true turning point” for the company, which is integrating LNG into daily operations while preparing for broader adoption of renewable fuels. He acknowledged the current limits of bio-LNG availability and called for investment and coordination across the sector to scale supply.

Axpo Italia CEO Simone Demarchi praised the collaboration and said the success in Genoa highlights the port’s role in advancing low-carbon shipping. The ship-to-ship delivery model demonstrated in the operation offers a replicable framework for expanding bio-LNG use across European ferry routes.
