In Indonesia, the Xinhua news agency reports Indonesia has allotted 2 million hectares in Merauke for sugarcane plantations that will be used to supply feedstock for the country’s first ethanol production facility. The factory is expected to produce 300 million liters of ethanol annually in three different units starting in 2027. Indonesia has long been a sugar producer but has failed to become self-sufficient in sugar despite several policy attempts over the past decade or more.
