In Switzerland, the Jakarta Globe newspaper writes that the European Commission has until October 22 to present an appeal to the World Trade Organization regarding its recently ruling predominantly in favor of Indonesia regarding the trade block’s antidumping measures on Indonesia palm oil imports. The 8% to 18% countervailing duties that have been in place since 2019 were mostly ruled against by a WTO trade dispute panel, meaning the EC can either lift those duties or appeal to the WTO. That could be in the form of the WTO’s appellate body or an ad hoc mechanism the EC may propose instead of allowing the case to hang in limbo indefinitely while the appellate body remains frozen due to US interference.
