India seeks to expand green hydrogen production

December 18, 2025 |

In the UK, Fuel Cells Works reported that India is positioning green hydrogen as a pillar of its long-term energy transition, with the government telling Parliament that national production capacity is likely to reach 5 million metric tons per year by 2030.

The update was delivered in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha by Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik, who framed the target as central to the National Green Hydrogen Mission’s goal of turning India into a global hub for production, use and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives, according to the report.

The government is leaning heavily on incentives to drive down costs and accelerate scale. Under the electrolyser manufacturing incentive scheme, 15 companies have been awarded a combined manufacturing capacity of 3,000MW per year. A separate production-linked scheme has allocated incentives to 18 companies covering a cumulative green hydrogen output of 862,000 tons per year, while two companies have secured incentives for 20,000 tons per year of hydrogen supply to refineries, according to the report.
