India breaks ground on near-2GW green hydrogen hub

January 22, 2026 |

In the UK, Fuel Cells Works reported that India has formally entered the global big-league of green hydrogen with the start of construction on a massive hydrogen-based ammonia project on the east coast.

AM Green has laid the foundation stone for its flagship development in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, marking the official launch of what will be the country’s largest renewable hydrogen project and one of the biggest worldwide, according to the report.

The first phase of the site—previously owned by Nagarjuna Fertilizers—is now under active construction, with initial output targeted for mid-2027, the report added.

The project is designed to produce up to 1.5 million tons per year of green ammonia, with AM Green expecting to reach 0.5 mtpa by mid-2027 before ramping up to full capacity. Once complete, the facility will integrate around 1.95GW of alkaline electrolyzers, backed by 7.5GW of renewable generation and 2GW of pumped-storage hydro to ensure round-the-clock operation.
