Hyundai’s high-pressure ammonia engine approved by class societies

October 17, 2024 |

In South Korea, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has successfully developed the world’s first high-pressure direct injection ammonia dual-fuel engine, the ‘H22CDF-LA,’ receiving key certifications from major global classification societies. The engine, designed to run on carbon-free ammonia, was tested from September 30 to October 2, 2024, at HD HHI’s Engine Techno Center in Ulsan, South Korea.

This groundbreaking technology represents a major milestone in the shipping industry’s push toward greener solutions. The 1.4 to 2.2 MW engine is capable of significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions by utilizing ammonia, a carbon-free fuel. It is intended for use in ammonia carriers and commercial vessels but can also be applied to land-based power generation.

In addition to using ammonia, the engine employs a Selective Catalytic Reduction system to control nitrogen oxides and reduce unburned ammonia emissions, further enhancing its environmental credentials.

HD HHI’s new ammonia dual-fuel engine builds on the company’s success with methanol-powered engines, continuing its leadership in sustainable maritime solutions. By securing approvals from classification societies, HD HHI aims to lead the eco-friendly shipbuilding market and contribute to the shipping industry’s decarbonization efforts.
