In South Korea, Sisa Journal reports Hyundai Motor Group announced an expanded hydrogen strategy at the World Hydrogen Expo 2025, extending its fuel cell technology beyond cars to include ships, tractors, and military applications. The company is working with HD Korea Shipbuilding to develop a hybrid electric propulsion system that combines hydrogen fuel cells and hydrogen-mixed diesel engines, with plans to commercialize the system for liquefied hydrogen carriers and other eco-friendly vessels.
The move comes as global shipping regulations tighten and demand grows for cleaner propulsion options. Hyundai also plans to replace diesel trucks operating near Ulsan Port with hydrogen electric tractors developed to meet local operating conditions and standards.
At the expo, Hyundai showcased its full hydrogen portfolio, from production and storage to mobility and industrial use. Its updated Nexo hydrogen SUV has exceeded 7,000 cumulative sales within three months, and nearly 1,000 hydrogen electric buses have been distributed as of October. The Xcient, the world’s first mass-produced hydrogen truck, has reached 19 million kilometers in cumulative mileage across global markets.
Hyundai is also developing PEM electrolysis and ammonia cracking technologies, with new hydrogen production facilities underway in Buan, Boryeong, and Jeju. A 1GW-scale complex on the southwest coast will support long-term plans for a hydrogen-powered AI city.
